How to Adjust the Timing in a VW Beetle

    • 1). Load the engine control module interface software provided by the parts manufacturer onto the computer. Connect the PC interface device to the computer and then to the OBD II connector under the steering wheel.

    • 2). Verify the battery is fully charged or connected to a reliable battery charger. Turn off any accessories such as lights, radio and climate controls. Start the interface software and turn the key to the "On" position without starting the VW Beetle engine.

    • 3). Start the PC interface device and answer the questions as they pertain to your vehicle including the vehicle identification number (VIN) found by looking through the windshield at the top of driver's side dash. Select the engine control module version desired and begin the data transfer.

    • 4). Check the computer monitor to ensure the progress bar is showing and wait for the data transfer to complete. The data transfer can take up to 30 minutes and is complete when the confirmation message appears on the screen.

    • 5). Turn the key to the "Off" position and remove the PC interface device from the OBD II connector. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 5 minutes.
