How to Fix an Automotive Dimmer Switch

    • 1). Turn off your vehicle and open the hood. Loosen the nut affixed to the negative (black) cable on your battery, using your pliers. This will disconnect the power from your battery and prevent a possible shock.

    • 2). Remove the trim panel from under the steering wheel. Use your flat-head screwdriver to carefully pry apart the trim from the mounted clips in the dash.

    • 3). Listen for a "snapping" sound as the trim unfastens from its position.

    • 4). Remove the cover panel, if necessary. Pull it off to expose the dimmer switch.

    • 5). Using your Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws from the mounted dimmer switch --- the small, black box with electrical wires.

    • 6). Pull the dimmer switch away from the mount to expose the wiring. At the rear of the switch you will see a plug containing the wiring. Remove the plug by pushing the plastic tab to release the plug from the switch.

    • 7). Discard the old dimmer switch; connect the new switch to the plug at the rear of the switch.

    • 8). Mount the new switch by inserting the screws into the mount. Tighten the screws with your Phillips screwdriver.

    • 9). Place the cover panel back to the original position over the dimmer switch. Affix the trim panel under the steering wheel, snapping the panel securely into place.

Reconnect the negative cable to your battery and close the hood.
